The 2007 petmillions contest has now ended, the finalists have been judged and a winner has been chosen...email notifications have been sent to the winner and runnersup.

Petmillions has raised $346 for animal charities and issued $300 in prize winnings to the 54 finalists.

Petmillions was created by people passionate about animals and animal welfare. The team have taken no money from this contest - all costs have been covered by ourselves. All entry money has been allocated to our charities and prizefund.

Although we were no way near our target we still believe petmillions is a great and worthy concept. Both Petmillions and our charity partners would like to thank you for the support and the resulting donations from your participation.

Petmillions.com Makes Cash Winners Of Animal Charities And Pet Owners

Animal lovers can make stars of their pets, raise money for charities and win Lotto-size cash prizes for themselves thanks to the launch of Petmillions.com (http://www.petmillions.com). The website invites pet owners to enter up to five photographs of their furry, feathered or finned favourites into a fun competition, with 80% of the modest entry fees being split between animal charities and the prize fund!

Every month the 20 pets attracting the most votes from visitors to the website will be entered into the grand final, to be judged by an independent panel. Entry fees are from just 80p* for each pet, with 40% of this going to animal charities, and 40% into the prize fund.

It is hoped that by the time entries for the 2007 Petmillions.com contest close on October 31 the prize fund could stand at more than £600,000!

Petmillions.com has been set up by Helen Porter and Richard Deehan, who are both passionate about animal welfare and wanted to use their internet skills to raise money for charities in a fun way. It already has the support of numerous animal charities including Blue Cross, Catchat.org, The World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA), PDSA, Born Free, The Dogs Trust, the Rabbit Welfare Fund, and the Border Collie Trust.

“I have always loved animals – I am automatically attracted to furry waifs and strays so it was probably only natural that this should spill over into my professional life,” says Helen, whose internet expertise has previously seen her work with companies such as Marks & Spencer, Dixons, and Laura Ashley.

“The internet has given us a great opportunity to raise money for animal welfare on a mass scale. This is a fun way to contribute to animal charities, and with the added incentive of serious cash prizes for less than a quid an entry I reckon you’d have to be barking not to try it!”

In addition to uploading photos, competition entrants can also add online descriptions and notes about their pets.

The 240 pets which reach the grand final will be independently judged by representatives from Snapfish, a division of digital imaging company Hewlett-Packard, and from animal medication firm Petmeds.co.uk.

The winner of the first prize will receive 80% of the total prize fund; 50 second prize winners will share 10% of the prize fund; and the remaining 189 finalists will share the final 10% of the prize fund. Winners will be announced in December.

Laura Rippon, a member of the fundraising team at the Dogs Trust, said: “Petmillions.com is a fantastic idea for raising money for animal charities, and we are pleased to be one of the charities benefiting from the contest donations.”

Peter Jones, head of fundraising at The Blue Cross, said: “The Blue Cross has been helping pets and people for over a hundred years. We understand the unique relationship between people and their pets, and wish Petmillions.com every success in helping people to share the joy their pets bring them.”

Petmillions would like to thank Jenny and the D for Dog Team for supporting us on their own community site and shop.

D for Dog began life in June 2004 as a dog photo gallery and shrine. Jenny Prevel has taken inspiration from her dogs, Boycie and Berkeley, to grow the site considerably since then to include dog news, events, articles and funnies, plus sections for lost dogs, items for sale, deaf dogs, dog services, charities, pet insurance, books, dog art, a friendly dog discussion forum, and of course an online store for doggie shopping.

One of our recent entries Scraps is one of 4 ferral cats. Although a few good natured locals are feeding them, there is still no protection for these cats. Living in a deralict house, they have never experienced the warmth and care of living in a loving human household.

Petmillions Marketing Director Helen Porter has grown up with Border Collies and was personally very happy when the Border Collie Trust decided to be part of the petmillions project.

Border Collie Trust GB exists to help Collies in need, and make every effort to place them in suitable homes. Our objective is to rescue and provide care and shelter for lost, abandoned, neglected and ill treated dogs and with particular regard to dogs of the Border Collie breed and other working dogs and to find new homes for such animals wherever possible. The Trust relies on public donations to care for and re-home the many border collies that require help.
